Looking to Write: Literacy Through Art

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), delivered the first phase of Looking to Write: Literacy Through Art, which provides middle and high school educators and students throughout Texas with a digital forum through which they will be able to access and share resources to encourage and augment learning about art and facilitate the development of literacy and writing skills. Eventually, the site will also enable students and teachers from across the state to virtually interact with peers throughout the country and the world, acting as a managed blog through which they can share their thoughts and ideas about works of art and artists, and exchange resources to enhance classroom teaching and learning about art and other core subjects.

During the proposed grant period, MFAH education staff members worked closely with middle and high school teachers creating new lesson plans that revolve around looking and writing about art. Teachers and education staff selected, compiled, and edited the student essays and teacher lesson plans; photographed the students whose work will be highlighted on the webpage, digitized the handwritten essays and incorporated them into the Web pages; and finalized the design and launched Looking to Write.
